New bids on the block

Article Abstract:

Digital Television Network, a consortium created by International CableTel, believes that its proposal for digital terrestrial television broadcasting in the UK is much rounder and more varied than that of British Digital Broadcasting, which has received a lot more media coverage. Digital Television would offer completely new programme and data services, while the proposals put forward by British Digital Broadcasting are mainly based on channels which are already available. Digital Television plans to operate 20 channels, of which four will be new ones which it will fund itself.

Totally wired: Ennis is the global village

Article Abstract:

Ennis, a small town on the west coast of Ireland, has been designated Ireland's Information Age Town. Telecom Eireann is providing the town with a large amount of information technology equipment and training, and it is planned that 80% of the town's households will have a computer by the end of Oct 1998. A fibre optic ring is being constructed around the town, thus allowing its residents access to the information superhighway, and local businesses and public amenities will be encouraged to develop online services.

New Labour, new sales figures?

Article Abstract:

The victory of the UK Labour party in the recent general election was a harsh blow for Conservative-supporting newspapers. Research indicates that these newspapers are likely to do very well under the new Labour government, but some observers disagree. They feel that newspapers are now sold mainly on the basis of extensive promotional activity, rather than for their political stance. However, there may be benefits for newspapers which can now be truly critical of the government.
