Under the hill of silver

Article Abstract:

The remote city of Potosi, Bolivia, is the highest city in the world. It is dominated by the Cerra Rico mountain, where silver was discovered in the 16th century. The silver deposits have been exhausted, and Potosi is now one of the poorest cities in Bolivia. It still has many colonial buildings, and is a Unesco World Heritage Site. There are many reminders of the city's former riches, but malnutrition and disease are rife.

'Our fine silver needs no hallmark.' (some UK silversmiths have no attachment to hallmark)

Article Abstract:

Many contemporary silversmiths in the UK believe that hallmarking is of no relevance at all to silver design. Some feel that the only argument in favour of hallmarking a piece of silver is if it has no artistic value, only bullion value. In many cases, contemporary silverware is having increasingly fewer links with the assay office, with some pieces not really appearing to be silver at all.
