G7's focus on trade deals with Africa is not enough

Article Abstract:

It is becoming more widely recognized that trade preferences and market access are not the only ways of boosting economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. There is a place for hard-line economics in the overall approach to economic development in this region, but wider issues must also be taken into account. It is important not to emphasize free markets at the expense of all other factors, and it must be realized that social development can be a cause as well as a result of economic development.

EMU could be a Trojan horse carrying reform into Europe

Article Abstract:

It is now widely accepted that European monetary union (EMU) is inevitable, so economists should focus on deciding whether it will have positive or negative repercussions. Many observers believe that EMU will be a catalyst for convergence between European economies. This trend will have advantages and disadvantages, even if there are overall benefits to the economy of Europe as a whole. Convergence may only come after a time of diverging performance by member countries.

Prices set for a drop - eventually

Article Abstract:

There is considerable potential for the introduction of the single European currency to boost competition, thus forcing prices down. It is also likely that governments will be forced to align taxes more closely. The single European currency should make it easier for companies to benefit from economies of scale, bringing advantages for customers and increased profitability. However, it could be some time before these changes take place.
