Eskimos surrender to lure of oil

Article Abstract:

There are rumours that Greenland may see the rapid creation of a thriving mining industry. This would be a welcome development in a country where the economy has become very weak. Scandinavian oil concerns Phillips and Statoil have been awarded offshore exploration licences in the Danish Strait, with seismic testing having revealed potential oil and gas reserves covering 400,000 sq km. Following lengthy negotiations with Denmark, Greenland will gain full control of the administration of its mineral resources on Jul 1, 1998.
