UK: RJB MINING SECURES GB[pound] 700MN COAL DEAL

Article Abstract:

RJB Mining, Britain's biggest coal miner, has won a GB[pound] 700mn deal to supply 25.5mn tonnes of coal to the Drax power station over five years. The deal secures the future of four colliers and the jobs of 2,500 miners. RJB said the deal with AES represents 60% of Drax's annual needs and so it will also bid for additional business. RJB already has contracts with National Power's coal-fired power stations. The coal industry has also been helped by up to GB[pound] 100mn in state subsidies over two years.

Gas plant go-ahead deals fresh blow to coal industry

Article Abstract:

National Power has announced plans to construct a 450 million pounds sterling, 1,500 megawatt gas-fired power station at Staythorpe, England. This will boost the company's gas-fired capacity to 4,500 megawatts when it comes on stream in 2003. The facility will accelerate the shift away from coal-fired power production in the UK. At present, coal and gas account for around one third each of the country's electricity requirements, but the share held by gas is forecast to reach 50% by the 21st century, with coal's share falling to as little as 15%.

Electricity generators poised to sign deals with RJB

Article Abstract:

The future of the UK's coal industry looks brighter with the news that the electricity generators are close to signing a long term coal supply deal with RJB Mining. The approval of PowerGen's takeover of East Midlands, announced last week, has removed the major obstacle blocking the deal between the generators and RJB, and it is now expected that the supply deal should be concluded after the Government's energy review is published early in October. It is understood that PowerGen will buy 20mn-25mn tonnes of coal over three years, which will help to safeguard the future of eight pits and 5,000 jobs in the coal industry. With a decline in electricity imports from France, coal burn in the UK has been 23% higher since April, compared with the previous year, creating a demand for an extra 3 mn tonnes of coal. The government's energy review is expected to uphold the moratorium on further gas-fired stations in order to favour the coal industry.
