General Sani Abacha

Article Abstract:

Soldier and head of state Sani Abacha passed out of the Nigerian Military Training Centre in 1963, and from that point enjoyed regular promotion, becoming a brigadier in 1980 and general when he was just over 40. In 25 years of military service, he held all the influential posts in the Nigerian army. He was deeply involved in the coming to power of General Babangida, but shunned publicity. He became Nigerian President in 1993 after Babangida had been persuaded to hand over the administration to an interim national government.

Abacha leaves a vacuum of power

Article Abstract:

It is not immediately clear who will replace Nigerian military ruler General Sani Abacha, who died suddenly. This power vacuum will create further political tension in Nigeria at a time when there was already considerable tension in the run-up to presidential elections on Aug 1, 1998. Both local opponents and western countries had rejected Abacha's transition to civilian rule as undemocratic. Many activists were arrested, but demonstrations were planned in the run-up to the elections.
