Generating companies fired by a dash for gas: new power stations are shifting decisively from oil and coal

Article Abstract:

By 1997, 28 new power stations will be operating in England and Wales and all except one will be fueled by gas. The National Grid Company forecast electricity supply exceeding demand by 56.9% in 1997-98, but this should not happen as older plants will be shut down. The breakup of the Central Electricity Generating Board has permitted choice of fuel and abandonment of British Coal because gas stations are quicker and cheaper to build and are less harmful to the environment. Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development statistics show that in 1973 over 1/4 of the base fuel of electricity generation was oil and 62.1% was coal. The proportion by 2005 will be 2.9% for oil, 42.8% for coal and 38.1 % for gas.

Dearest Santa: video games, not records

Article Abstract:

Video games are more popular than records and CDs as presents for the 12-15 age group. Over half the Christmas toys sold in 1992 are video games. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the number one bestseller. Marketing staff believe children prefer the interaction required to the passivity of watching television or listening to music. Television screens are excellent quality. Nintendo and Sega share the market. Sales continue because of improved technology with a larger microprocessor and compact disc technology.
