Ginette Harrison

Article Abstract:

Medical practitioner and mountaineer Ginette Harrison began rock climbing as a teenager. She continued this activity while studying medicine at Bristol University, England. She climbed her first big summit, Denali, at the age of 25. In 1989, she led an all-male team on Masherbrum, in the Karakoram Range, reaching an altitude of around 7,000 mt. After qualifying as a doctor, she worked on a series of locums in Bristol and then Australia, continuing to undertake climbing expeditions. She died in an avalanche on Dhauligiri.

Dr Charles Warren

Article Abstract:

Physician and mountaineer Charles Warren studied Medicine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, England, and at Bart's. While a young houseman, he joined his first Himalayan expedition in 1933, making the first ascent of the 6,454mt Bhagirathi III. He was involved in several other Everest expeditions in the 1930s. He served in the emergency medical services hospital in Bishop's Stortford, England, during the second world war, and subsequently focused on paediatrics, becoming a specialist in the treatment of neonatal jaundice.

Lt-Col James Roberts

Article Abstract:

Army officer and mountaineer James Roberts joined the 1st Gurkha Rifles in India after being educated in the UK. He developed a strong interest in Himalayan mountaineering, and joined his first serious expedition in 1938. He commanded 153 Gurkha Parachute Battalion during the second world war, and subsequently served in Malaya. He led a Joint Services team to make the first ascent on Annapurna II in 1960, and in 1963 organized the logistics for the American Everest expedition.
