Giving it the full exposure

Article Abstract:

The new biography of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, written by Patricia Morrisroe, has attracted mixed views. It has been strongly criticised by punk singer Patti Smith, who was very close to Mapplethorpe, and by all of his friends. They believe that the book portrays him incorrectly as a ruthless opportunist. However, other observers believe that there is an element of jealousy in Smith's reaction.

Article Abstract:

Drag has traditionally been regarded as marginal, but has recently started to become much more mainstream. Drag queens have appeared in a number of successful films and on television programmes, most notably in 'To Wong Foo,' a film produced by Steven Spielberg's company. Glamour has become a very attractive quality, and has started to be enjoyed by both men and women.

The pursuit of eternal youth

Article Abstract:

The practice of castrating young boys to preserve their voices was widespread in the 17th and 18th centuries, and castrati were often seen as superstars. They were the pop idols of their day, with women finding them fascinating. There is still considerable interest in the concept today among film-makers, writers and composers.
