Global village rivals power of the state

Article Abstract:

The recent Group of Seven (G7) meeting on the information superhighway agreed on an uncontroversial statement of 'core principles' and a series of pilot schemes to encourage the development of a global information infrastructure. However, there is clearly still a lack of agreement on the management of the information superhighway, and the world's largest companies are set to invest much more in information technology than governments. Furthermore, Europe is coming under growing pressure from the US government and US industry to open up its telecommunications markets.

The most significant challenge for the IMF at present is Russia, and it is determined not to be deceived by the Russian authorities, as has happened in the past.

UK faces life on the outside looking in

Article Abstract:

Britain's European policy is aimed at avoiding alliances and preventing any one state from gaining supremacy. German Chancellor Helmut Kohl implied that Germany would pursue a mini-Europe if Britain appeared to be unable to ratify the Maastricht treaty. This would weaken the Atlantic relationship. European integration was founded on keeping all states equal, as a core group would weaken the EC.
