Globetrotting

Article Abstract:

There are a number of reproductions of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in the US. In Ashland, OR, for example, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has a modern theatre, a studio and an Elizabethan theatre. Some elements of the design of the Elizabethan theatre, which seats 1,188, are excellent, but the width of the stage and the size of the auditorium can create difficulties. The Utah Shakespeare Festival has an outdoor and an indoor theatre in Cedar City, UT. The outdoor theatre is designed as a modern adaptation of a Tudor Playhouse, and is oval, rather than circular.

Rylance is the wrong man for the Globe. The space is too restrictive. It's no more than a theme park. Wrong, wrong, wrong

Article Abstract:

The restoration of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre has gone ahead despite considerable scepticism, and the almost-completed project looks very impressive. However, doubts still remain about the long-term success of the theatre. Modern theatre directors will inevitably find it very restrictive, as indeed Shakespeare himself did, and will probably be unable to make their own mark on productions held there. There is also the question of whether there is a modern-day equivalent of Shakespeare's audiences.

Same canvas, new landscape

Article Abstract:

There have been considerable challenges associated with the development of the Lowry Centre on Salford Quays, south of Manchester, England. This project, due to open in spring 1999, includes a theatre and gallery complex, along with space to store archive material relating to artist T.S. Lowry, who is closely associated with Salford, England. The success of the Lowry Centre will be largely determined by whether the planned Imperial War Museum of the North at nearby Trafford, England, goes ahead.
