Through the labyrinth

Article Abstract:

Robert Anderson, 47, was appointed Director of the British Museum at the beginning of 1992 and will have the mammoth task of managing the changes when the British Library moves out and the Ethnography Collection from Burlington Gardens moves in. These changes will have occurred by the 250th anniversary of the museum in the year 2003. The rearrangements will bring out the splendour of Smirke's architecture. Anderson is not an advocate of the amusement arcade approach that several museums have adopted but he is very enthusiastic about the new education centre that will utilise some of the new space.

Cavaliers, cads and codpieces

Article Abstract:

Costumed interpreters are now being increasingly used at museums, castles and heritage sites across the UK to re-enact significant events of the past. Some observers have expressed reservations about the historical accuracy and educational value of costumed events, and fear that museums are becoming too similar to theme parks. However, those who organize such events point out that great efforts are made to ensure that they are as accurate as possible.

Young mothers in the labyrinth of power

Article Abstract:

The 1985 Local Government Act authorises the public to consult council documents but they use difficult language and refer to other reports which are not available. Citizens can speak for 10 minutes at a committee meeting but there are no introductions or explanations. A group of young mothers in Peckham, south London, England saved a creche and drop-in centre from closure when the Hummingbird nursery was closed.
