Go-ahead for 220m rail freight link to Chunnel

Article Abstract:

In order to cut the amount of freight using the roads in the UK and to triple the amount of freight traffic carried by rail over the next ten years, Railtrack is to be involved in plans for a rail freight expressway that will link Scotland with the Channel Tunnel. The Government is to invest some GB 150mn in the GB 220mn project which is expected to be in operation in five years time . Before such a time Railtrack will be involved in the widening of tunnels and raising of bridges on the lines that are to be used by the trains.

Book superstores " to take 20% of market"

Article Abstract:

Currently book superstores account for around one fifth of the US market and US-based Borders chairman predicts this share could be matched in the UK before long where such superstores are at present only just starting to appear. Border is set to open its first UK superstore on Oxford Street in London on 01 August 1998 and predicts that the wider range of books along with magazines, music and coffee bar facilities will appeal to the consumer.
