Golfers do it anywhere they can

Article Abstract:

There are around 1,000 new golf courses planned thoroughout the UK in addition to the 2,000 already in existence and the average 18 hole course takes up around 125 acres. Import of food is the biggest component of the British trading deficit, and these imports cost 6.5 billion pounds sterling in 1991. Imported bacon, butter and cheese, costing 484, 221 and 435 million pounds sterling respectively could be produced at home on the land being turned into golf courses.

'The borders, quiet in May when I first visited, were blazing: echinops, plume poppy, stately spires of delphiniums.' (garden at Misarden Park, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire)

Article Abstract:

The layout of the garden at Misarden Park, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, has remained almost completely unchanged since the late 17th century, but now carefully incorporates 20th century gardening styles. Two large herbaceous borders surround the house, and the garden also includes a long pergola of roses, a sculpted yew hedge and a kitchen garden. The nursery there specialises in herbaceous perennials.

Downfall of the Rambling Rector

Article Abstract:

Gardeners often find that their pergolas collapse in a strong wind, even if the foundations are very secure. The wood which forms the pergola can rot quite quickly, so it is essential to treat it thoroughly with a preservative. Any repairs should be undertaken with great care, avoiding damage to the roots of existing plants.
