You couldn't make it up

Article Abstract:

The Sun newspaper will no longer reveal that somebody is homosexual when that person does not want this fact to be widely known, according to editor David Yelland. Instead, the newspaper will merely spark off debate about homosexuals in public life. He regards his job as creating as much controversy as possible without actually damaging people's lives. He rejects any suggestion that the Sun's approach to gay sexuality has fluctuated wildly, and emphasizes that it is no longer acceptable to openly or even privately discriminate against homosexuals.

A final swipe at the last Governor goes wide of the mark

Article Abstract:

An inquiry is being caried out in the UK on the former Hong Kong governor, Chris Patten, and his role in 'The Last Governor', a work by Jonathan Dimbleby. It is alleged that Patten was in breach of the Official Secrets Act in supplying some of the information for the book. This inquiry reflects opposition to Patten from within the Foreign Office. The dispute relates to whether Patten should have fought for direct elections for Hong Kong's Legislative Council in 1994.

The reports of 15 BBC task forces recommend expansion of the network including 24-hour television and radio news channels. Reorganisation of sport, light entertainment, arts and drama is suggested. Radio 5 should be remodelled. Most reports recommend retaining licence fees and multi-channels. They form the basis of a document to be published for debate in May 1992 by the governors and senior management board.
