Gonzalez struggles to regain credibility

Article Abstract:

Spanish prime minister Felipe Gonzalez has announced his determination not to resign, but it now seems likely that his government will fall. He has already offered to hold negotiations with the main conservative opposition Popular Party, realising that many voters are becoming disillusioned with his Socialist government. The government has had to face a number of scandals, and has been particularly damaged by allegations that one its top ministers may have been in control of paramilitary death squads in the 1980s.

Separatist violence rends Spain with gun and bomb attacks

Article Abstract:

There has been a sudden escalation of separatist violence in Spain recently. Incidents have include the murder of a Supreme Court judge in the street in Madrid and a car bomb attack in Granada. They will serve to seriously damage efforts by the Spanish government to deal with the problem of Basque violence through negotiations. It appears that, for the time being at least, separatist organisation Eta believes that its aims can be furthered more rapidly through violence than through dialogue.

Power slips through the fingers of Spain's ruling Socialists

Article Abstract:

Spain's Socalist Party has introduced many reforms in the 12 years in which it has been in government, but has now lost a lot of support. Prime minister Felipe Gonzalez is seen as lacking in ideas, but the party fears that without him it may collapse altogether. Particular difficulties are being caused at present by the reopening of the investigation into the Gal anti-terrorist death squads, which may cause long-term damage to democracy in Spain.
