How to explain a cost ahead of its time

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) has recently published a booklet dealing with accounting for research and development costs. This issue is becoming increasingly significant as companies become more globalized and must deal with a number of different approaches to accounting. A report from an ICAS working party calls for an future accounting standard for research and development costs to focus on innovation, rather than just research and development.

Tweedie fires off a warning shot across company bows

Article Abstract:

The Accounting Standards Board (ASB) produced two documents 'The Foreword to Accounting Standards' and 'Draft Foreword to Urgent Issues Task Force Abstracts' which contain legal statements relating to recent changes in the law and the 1985 Companies Act. The ASB attacks creative accounting used by some companies during acquisitions and mergers to dissuade companies from taking them to court. The ASB has been funded by the financial community and the government since 1990.

Making books less binding

Article Abstract:

The International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) has generally not been taken very seriously by accountants, but it is now working hard to show that it has an important role in modern business. Indeed, the IASC may play a very significant part in financial services as business becomes increasingly globalised and companies need to produce financial statements which can be understood anywhere in the world.
