Got the evolution blues ...

Article Abstract:

Evolutionary theory is now beginning to have an influence on the way people look at mental illness. Until recently, mental illness has been regarded as either the result of traumatic experiences in childhood or a sign of problems with the individual's brain chemistry. However, applying evolutionary theory to mental illness indicates that many forms of mental illness could in fact be normal defence mechanisms, determined by natural selection, which have begun functioning in a way which is no longer appropriate. It is possible to regard a panic attack, for example, as having great survival value.

Is this the valediction to addiction?

Article Abstract:

The drug ibogaine, which is produced from a West African shrub, is being increasingly regarded as having the potential to cure heroin addiction. It has a strange ability to give those who take it a high-speed overview of their life, and gives addicts a strong insight into their behaviour very quickly. Some observers believe that it can cure heroin addicts after only one dose. However, many of those who profit from treating heroin addicts in more conventional ways have expressed doubts about the use of ibogaine.

Switch on for a real medical drama

Article Abstract:

Telemedicine was first developed in the early 1960s, when it was used to monitor the health of astronauts. It has now found a much wider range of applications in the US, where it is being promoted as having the potential to save both patient and specialist time, allowing consultations to be held with experts over great distances. However, there have been some technical problems, and some doctors still prefer a low-tech approach.
