Article Abstract:

Those involved in creating the Independent newspaper's website were determined that it would not resemble an online newspaper. It was decided to express the structure with translucent drop-down menus, thus creating a balance between the need for a lot of information in a small space and the need for a simple appearance. Adopting dynamic HTML made it possible to give new treatments to navigation menus, while dynamic sub-menus allow readers to clearly see where they need to go. Plans for the future include incorporating more material from the Independent and from other existing Independent properties.
