Gulf War Syndrome: all in the mind's eye

Article Abstract:

The debate on Gulf War Syndrome centers on insecticides and inoculations as a cause in the United Kingdom, while in the US, exposure to sarin is seen as a possible cause. The UK government is investing more in research into this condition. A US report by the General Accounting Office has been criticised by the Department of Veteran Affairs for being unscientific. It is unlikely that nerve gases can cause delayed illness. The death rates of those with the syndrome appears no higher than those without, though the afflicted report more symptoms. The impact of stress from war could be the cause of this condition.

The English women's novel, killed by feminism

Article Abstract:

It is clear that women's writing has gained widespread acceptance in modern society in the UK. However, British women's writing may also be coming to the end of its history as a distinct literary genre as the 21st century approaches. Postmodern women writers are aware of belonging to a literary tradition, and this has made their fiction self-reflexive and parodic. Significant changes have taken place to the insularity of setting and the consistency of style that so clearly characterized British women's fiction as a topic in the 1970s.

The betrayal of feminism

Article Abstract:

Baroness Margaret Jay, the UK's Women's Minister, has denied being a feminist. She feels that feminism is regarded negatively in politics, with feminists seeking to establish barriers between men and women. In fact, feminism continues to thrive, and is becoming more inclusive. Indeed, its most significant success has been under the current New Labour government. Politics involving women is being acknowledged as a key element of strategy, and man-made barriers between the private family and public areas of work are being abolished.
