Halldor Laxness

Article Abstract:

Writer Halldor Laxness published his first major novel, 'The Great Weaver from Kashmir,' in 1927. This was followed in 1929 by 'The Book of the People,' a collection of radical essays. He is most well known for the epic novels he published in the 1930s. These were 'Salka Valka,' and 'World Light.' He also wrote a book of poems, four books of memoirs, eight plays and many essays and speeches. His point of view is always clearly Icelandic, but his writing also has an international dimension.

Owen Barfield

Article Abstract:

Writer and solicitor Owen Barfield came up to Wadham College, Oxford, England, on a classical scholarship after the first world war. His thesis for his BLitt had a significant impact on C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. He assisted his father in the family law firm, and did not do much writing until after his retirement from law in 1959. His most influential works include 'The Silver Trumpet,' published in 1925, and 'History in English Words,' published in 1926.

Chaim Bermant

Article Abstract:

Writer Chaim Bermant was born in Poland, but moved to Glasgow, Scotland, with his family in 1938. He taught for a time in Hebrew classes, and became a committed Zionist, spending several lengthy periods in Israel. He tried to transfer his family life to the Holy Land on two occasions in the 1970s and the 1980s, but eventually chose to remain in London, England. He gained a strong reputation as a skilled writer of fiction and non-fiction.
