Professor John Heslop-Harrison

Article Abstract:

Botanist John Heslop-Harrison studied at King's College, Durham University, England. After service during the second world war, he took up a lectureship in Agricultural Botany at King's College. He moved to Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1946. He subsequently moved to University College London, but in 1954 returned to Queen's University at Professor of Botany. He was subsequently appointed Mason Professor of Botany at Birmingham University, England, and in 1971 became Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Professor Robert Brown

Article Abstract:

Professor Robert Brown was a plant physiologist who focused on growth and differentiation. He initially worked on barley and marrow seedlings and later studied substances that certain seedlings produce at their roots, before focusing in how higher plant cells expanded and differentiated. He worked at Edinburgh University, Scotland, and helped to make that university's botany department one of the highes rated in Britain. He retired in 1977 and continued his interests as a gardener.

Nicholas Polunin

Article Abstract:

Botanist and environmentalist Nicholas Polunin graduated from Christ Church, Oxford, England, with First Class Honours in Botany and Ecology. He undertook further study at Yale University and Oxford University. He was involved in botanical explorations in Iceland, Greenland, Arctic Canada and Lapland in the 1930s, and identified a number of new arctic plants. He was later instrumental in establishing the University of Baghdad in Iraq and the University of Ife in Ibadan, Nigeria.
