Hallelujah! At last the Government has seen the light, if not the Beeb

Article Abstract:

UK Education Secretary David Blunkett has taken a radical step in deciding to give government financial support to two Muslim schools. He was right to recognize that Muslim schools should be placed on the same basis as other denominational schools and that there is a clear need for educational diversity, even if multiculturalism is to be encouraged in all schools. The same openness to cultural differences has not been shown by football commentator John Motson, who claimed that he finds it hard to distinguish between black players.

Opening soon: the doors to the inner sanctums

Article Abstract:

It was traditionally accepted in UK society that there were some places where most ordinary people could not go. This attitude has now changed, with people no longer being prepared to see their entry to certain establishments barred. They are rebelling against outdated customs and meaningless rituals, and are adopting the view that access to all parts of society should be on the basis of individual ability. This attitude is likely to have an impact on the Armed Services, the Civil Service, the Freemasons and similar institutions.

Why we don't always know we're being racist

Article Abstract:

It is very common for Britons not to realize when they are being racist. Most racism does not take the form of clear discrimination or verbal abuse, and is much more likely to consist of minor thoughtless remarks and actions. People generally take care not to offend blacks deliberately, but may be guilty of racism through incompetence, carelessness or neglect. It will prove very difficult to convince these people of their own unconscious prejudice. However, we must do so if they are to not be guilty of racism in the future.
