Hard times for doves of Israel

Article Abstract:

Conflict between Likud, Israel's right-wing opposition, and the country's Labour party has most recently focused on a television commercial produced by Likud. This showed a live dove emerging from the folds of the Israeli flag, and was intended to emphasise that Likud represents patriotic peace. However, an unedited tape of the commercial has shown that the dove was in fact tied to its perch and could not fly freely. This has attracted protests from animal rights groups, and has been exploited by the Labour party to show that Likud would never succeeded in completing peace negotiations.

The day the Israeli dream died

Article Abstract:

The state of Israel has for many decades tried to foster a sense of Jewish unity, but this illusion may be shattered following the assassination of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. It is now clear that the government's policy of isolating the extreme religious right-wingers, who oppose the peace process, has not been successful. Some liberal Israelis hope that the assassination will show the opponents of the peace process in a poor light, but this is unlikely to be the case for long.

Has peace been blown apart?

Article Abstract:

The peace process between Israel and the Palestinians is now in serious danger after the recent suicide bomb attacks in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Against a background of renewed terrorism, Yasser Arafat will not be able to gradually form a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank, and Shimon Peres may see the end of his political career. The current crisis contrasts sharply with the positive developments which were taking place only a short time ago.
