Harold Sumption

Article Abstract:

Advertising executive and charity fund-raiser Harold Sumption began his working life in an advertising agency in London, England, in the early 1930s. He attended many public meetings, and in this way accidentally came into contact with the Society of Friends, which he joined in 1936. He became associated with Oxfam after the second world war, and was to serve as a board member for 35 years from 1950. He became a Fellow of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, and played a role in the creation of the Montreux International Direct Marketing Symposium.

Harold Disney

Article Abstract:

Engineer Harold Disney served an apprenticeship with a firm of railway wagon builders after leaving school. He then spent four years working in the drawing offices of International Combustion. During this time, he studied at evening classes at University College, Nottingham, England. He worked at the Engineering Dept of Filling Factories Organisation's headquarters in London, England, during the second world war, and after the second world war was involved in setting up the atomic energy programme.

Arpad Elfer

Article Abstract:

Advertising director and photographer Arpad Elfer grew up in Hungary. He studied at the college of art in Berlin, Germany, and then became an art director. He moved to Paris, France, in 1933, and in 1935 became creative artist at Colman, Prentis and Varley in London, England. He served in the Pioneer Corps and the Royal Engineers Ordnance Survey during the second world war, and in 1946 became art director at Colman, Prentis and Varley. He was Head of Graphic Design at the BBC between 1968 and 1970.
