Have you heard? Radio is critically ill

Article Abstract:

There are now almost no professional radio critics left in the UK. There is no regular exchange of views between people who have knowledge and experience of radio and can give feedback to creative people in radio. The crisis facing radio broadcasting has been reflected in the new Radio 4 schedules for Apr 1998 onwards, which seem to be an attempt to bring cultural credibility into radio from outside. It seems impossible that children and young people in the UK will develop a strong interest in serious speech radio.

NI backs MacKenzie bid for Talk Radio

Article Abstract:

News International, the UK holding company of media magnate Rupert Murdoch, is supporting former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie as he assembles a consortium to make a bid for national radio station Talk Radio, which is experiencing difficulties. News International has been very keen to get MacKenzie away from the Mirror titles, and observers believe that the company would have supported almost any venture he suggested. This initiative highlights the fact that Murdoch often continues to have a hold on key employees.

Radio to tickle your brain as well as your rhythm stick

Article Abstract:

The UK's many radio stations all have an individual programme mix and identity, thus allowing them to distinguish themselves from their competitors. Listeners tend to switch quite frequently between stations, showing relatively little loyalty. The BBC's place within radio broadcasting is extremely significant, as it allows minority issues to be aired. It gives comprehensive and credible coverage, and benefits from not being influenced by narrow interest groups or the views of proprietors.
