Helen Kirkpatrick Milbank

Article Abstract:

Journalist Helen Kirkpatrick Milbank performed extremely well academically at Smith College in the US and at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She worked in France as a stringer for the New York Herald Tribune, and after coming to the UK in 1937 founded a weekly newsletter, Whitehall News. She moved to the London, England, office of the Chicago Daily News as the second world war approached, and in the mid-1940s was information officer for the Marshall Plan mission in Paris, France.

Janet Murrow

Article Abstract:

Public servant Janet Murrow studied at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She moved to London, England, in 1937 with her husband Ed Murrow, and during the early stages of the second world war broadcast for the CBS network. She also arranged for the evacuation of children from London. She returned to the US in 1946, and for nine years from 1970 worked in the Arts Museum of Holyoke College. She eventually became the Executive Director of the Art Advisory Committee.

Helen de Freitas

Article Abstract:

Public servant Helen de Freitas graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania in 1936. She came to the UK after meeting her future husband aboard the SS Berengaria. She returned to the US in 1940, but in 1941 came back to the UK and worked in the Knaresborough General Hospital. She travelled extensively with her husband as his political career developed, and spent time in Ghana and Kenya. She became very involved with her work as Trustee of Bryn Mawr College.
