Totally bananas

Article Abstract:

The decision by Andersen Consulting Managing Partner and Chief Executive George Shaheen to leave the company after 32 years to move to Webvan, a small online grocery company, was greeted with considerable surprise. Webvan, which is based in Foster City, CA, and has less than 20,000 customers, has subsequently floated 25 million shares. Shaheen holds 1.25 million shares, which are now valued at more than $30 million, and has options to purchase 15 million more at $8. Webvan currently has only one warehouse, but plans 26 more. Using very large warehouses will allow a reduction in labour and leasing costs.

Oh, how I miss the good old British aisles

Article Abstract:

Supermarkets in the US are always extremely large, but their aisles are narrow and very cluttered. They are badly designed, and never look very clean. All supermarkets tend to stock almost exactly the same items, thus giving consumers very little choice. Shelf space is mainly taken up with sweet products such as cake, and the range of savoury and fresh items is quite small. This situation may improve as a result of the decision by UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's to purchase the Star Markets chain in New England.

South wants devolution from US

Article Abstract:

The members of the new Southern Party recognize that it may never be possible for the US South to become independent by peaceful, constitutional means. However, they feel that devolution has become a significant political issue. The party, registered in Houston, TX, is already organizing in all 18 southern states and has attracted a great deal of interest. This reflect the fact that interest in Confederate history has increased significantly recently.
