How bribes and secret bank accounts led to a bomb in the directors' box

Article Abstract:

The events leading to the murder of Ukrainian football club Shakhtyor Donetsk Pres Aleksandr Bragin in 1995 started after Russian football agent Grigori Yesaulenko threatened Manchester United Football Club Chmn Martin Edwards, indicating that his life would be in danger if he did not sell winger Andrei Kanchelskis. Manchester United had purchased Kanchelskis from Shakhtyor Donetsk in 1991, but was reluctant to sell him on because this club would have demanded part of the fee, making the deal unviable. Yesaulenko indicated to Edwards that he would deal with this situation.

A game of two halves: the rich and the poor

Article Abstract:

The UK's top football clubs, such as Manchester United, have become extremely wealthy over recent years, mainly as the result of extensive merchandising. Supporters are now treated like customers, and the cost of match tickets has risen accordingly. However, financial problems are emerging as top clubs are being increasingly forced to invest huge sums of money in acquiring the best players. Some have even gone into deficit, with particularly problems for the lower ranking clubs.

Cash riddle of China's star players

Article Abstract:

Considerable uncertainty surrounds the transfer fees paid by Crystal Palace football club for leading Chinese footballers Fan Zhiyi and Sun Jihai. The transfer deal was subject to a confidentiality clause, but it has been established that there is a 400,000 pounds sterling gap between the amount Crystal Palace has agreed to pay and the fees the Chinese authorities are expecting to obtain. This gap cannot be entirely explained by agents' fees.
