Heroes must do more than entertain us

Article Abstract:

Men who take risks, especially in sporting activities such as sailing, are often portrayed by the media as heroes. However, some observers feel that these men are not really heroes at all, especially as they have to indulge in increasingly pointless projects in order to prove themselves. They are certainly courageous, but they are inherently selfish and contribute little to society as a whole. The real heroes are ordinary people who have to cope with poverty or who undertake very difficult jobs, such as fighting fires.

Britain's gay MPs: out of the closet but not yet equal

Article Abstract:

There has been a rather indifferent reaction to the announcement by several Labour MPs in the UK that they are gay. The vast majority of ordinary people in UK are not really interested in what MPs do in private, and would rather not know about MPs' sexuality. This attitude clearly highlights the fact that gay and straight people are by no means treated as equals in the UK. Strong heterosexuality is given a great deal of publicity, while homosexuality is pushed to one side and regarded as rather distasteful.

For little women

Article Abstract:

Most women's glossy magazines seem to take a very narrow view about the issues in which women may be interested, and do not really treat women as grown-ups at all. It is widely accepted that women's magazines offer escapism, but their approach can be too extreme and detached from real life. They lack social and political awareness, and have generally moved very much downmarket over recent years.
