Houses made for parties

Article Abstract:

Irish Georgian homes were designed specifically for lavish entertaining. Their owners wished to hold many parties, and were also involved in fishing, shooting and hunting. The largest Georgian homes in Ireland employed large numbers of people, and required vast quantities of food and fuel. More emphasis was placed on appearances than on comfort, and the homes were often extremely cold. There was strong competition between owners to have the most attractive home, and this meant that owners often spent more than they could really afford.

Last notes in an Anglo-Irish symphony

Article Abstract:

Anglo-Irish writers such as Elizabeth Bowen, Maria Edgeworth and George Moore have made an extremely valuable contribution to literature. The era of Anglo-Irish literature has now effectively come to an end with the recent death of Molly Keane. Most of the writers were women, mainly from country backgrounds where they lived in large old houses and were forced to write in order to earn some money. Their writing presents a unique pastiche of the Irish world.

Empire of the senses

Article Abstract:

Ireland's historic gardens are becoming increasingly widely recognized as an integral part of the country's unique heritage. The preservation of these gardens is now being supported by the Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme, under which owners receive grants in return for allowing public access. The most interesting Irish gardens include Kilruddery, the most complete 17th century garden in Ireland, and the kitchen garden of Ballymaloe.
