Hero's voyage ends in Hollywood

Article Abstract:

The rights to the journal written by Lieutenant Damon 'Rocky' Gause as he undertook a 3,000 mile journey from the Philippines to Australia during the second world war are to be auctioned soon. Gause, who was a flier with the America's 27th Bombardment Group (Light), escaped from a Japanese prison in Manila, Philippines, in Apr 1942. He eventually reached Wyndam, Australia, 159 days later, having swum long distances and travelled in a boat with an unreliable diesel engine. He later died while test-piloting a P47 bomber over the Isle of Wight in Mar 1944.

'Fly me' folk hero set to take to skies again

Article Abstract:

Sir Freddie Laker plans to launch services from the UK, Germany and possibly also Italy to southern Florida in 1996. He is now 73, but still has great enthusiasm and is determined to put the problems with the original Laker Airways behind him. His new venture will offer 'superior cabin service,' and he believes that it will benefit from a likely strong rise in demand for travel to southern Florida.
