Hidden evidence

Article Abstract:

Police forces across the UK continue to be extremely unwilling to disclose information about cases in which people have died in police custody. This places the families of victims at a considerable disadvantage when they attempt to take legal action against the police. A death in custody usually prompts an investigation by the Police Complaints Commission, which in turn holds up the inquest. Families may only learn at the inquest how the victim dies.

Too much police force?

Article Abstract:

Some observers are expressing concern about long-handled batons and CS gas, which are now being used by police officers in some parts of the UK for additional protection. Civil rights organisation Liberty believes that CS gas is not always being used in accordance with the guidelines set out by the Association of Chief Police Officers, and there have been claims that long-handled batons are also being used inappropriately.

When the police don't fit the bill

Article Abstract:

Statistics indicate that crime seems to be falling in the UK. However, it could be that more crime is going unreported, as people lack confidence in the police. There is clear need to reform policing, along with new economic and social policies to deal with crime.
