High culture? Give me Beavis and Butthead

Article Abstract:

The dumbing down of culture which is currently being experienced in many countries can be attributed to a failure of critical will by those who see themselves of guardians of culture. Film critics have rejected 'Beavis and Butthead Do America,' for example, which is in fact an extremely clever film. The main characters in the film are created out of banality, but are actually much less banal than most operas, plays and concerts. It is now necessary to develop a new critical language which can deal with art and culture which is not socially responsible.

Can't watch, must watch

Article Abstract:

There has already been considerable controversy surrounding 'No Child of Mine,' a film about child abuse which is to be broadcast shortly. This has been made with the backing of all the main national child support agencies, and 46 special telephone lines will be open after it has been broadcast. Telling the story of a girl who as pimped by her father from the age of 10 and sexually abused by her mother and stepfather, it is designed to highlight the lack of 'safe houses' for sexually abused children.

A few of my pet hates

Article Abstract:

It is natural that people come to love their pets and are concerned about unnecessary cruelty to animals. However, it is hard to understand why, in order to be kind to animals, some people have to pretend that they are just like humans. People tend to project onto their pets many different emotions they just do not possess. In fact, those who are really concerned about animal welfare would not keep pets at all. However, this radical approach would not gain widespread support.
