The gangster regime we fund

Article Abstract:

There has been evidence for some time that members of Albania's ruling Democratic Party are involved in illegal arms trading and drugs trafficking. Despite this, western democracies continue to support Albania financially. Europe in particular has been strongly supportive of president Sali Berisha, but it is now becoming clear that he cannot provide the stability which this area of the Balkans requires. Many observers feel that western countries should have been more cautious in their support for Albania.

How we feast on tragedy

Article Abstract:

Media coverage of the massacre of students at Columbine High School in Denver, CO, has been extremely intrusive. Journalists have frequently spoken of the need to allow the healing process to begin, but their continued presence is preventing this from happening. Horrified teenagers have been relentlessly pursued by reporters, and this is likely to be inflicting further psychological damage. The media is merely feasting on the distress of others, rather than showing genuine sympathy for the victims.

One woman's dangerous and lonely battle to break the Cosa Nostra

Article Abstract:

The hill town of San Giuseppe Jato, situated in the hinterland of Palermo, Italy, has for many years had close links with the Mafia. This situation presents considerable challenges for Maria Maniscalco, the town's mayor. There is fierce competition between supporters of the old-style Mafia and those who support the Mafia in its new manifestation. This is placing a severe burden on civil life, especially through the Mafia's ability to manipulate petty bureaucracy.
