'Hit harder, George. Is that the best you can do?' (Leon Gast's film 'When We Were Kings' shows boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Oct 1974)

Article Abstract:

Leon Gast's documentary film 'When We Were Kings' is very effective in capturing the atmosphere of the boxing match which took place between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Zaire in Oct 1974. The film was shot over a period of two months, but was not completed for another 23 years. It was initially intended to focus on the three-day music festival held in the run-up to the fight, but Gast actually found it more interesting to film Ali. He encountered many difficulties before, during and after shooting the film.

Boxing stands accused after tragedy in ring

Article Abstract:

The recent death of bantamweight boxer Jim Murray following a fight with Drew Docherty has once again led to calls for boxing to be banned. The sport will now have to justify its continued existence, and its leading figures will look at the lessons that can be learned from this latest death. The widescale violence which took place at the fight has also given cause for concern.
