The Dunblanes that will never be reported

Article Abstract:

Clause 43 of the UK government's Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Bill stated in its original form that no news organization would be permitted to identify, or play a role in the identification of, anybody under 18 who had been involved in an alleged crime. It is right that children involved in crime have some protection, but Clause 43 goes against the freedom of journalists to report facts, which is a basic element of liberal democracy. Limits on any area of reporting should only be imposed if there is both a high public interest and exemptions are effective.
