Hold your fire, Lord Chancellor

Article Abstract:

The Lord Chancellor, Lord Mackay of Clashfern, plans to reduce costs by limiting legal aid and the green form scheme. Those too poor to pay legal fees will be expected to find the money or not pursue their rights. Research shows that 73% of those injured in accidents do not claim for compensation, partly because of the expense. Proposals for alternatives to adversarial court procedures should be considered for cost savings before cutting legal aid. The Law Society has gained the right to a judicial review of the Lord Chancellor's regulations.

Draw a lace veil over the Lord Chancellor

Article Abstract:

There has been extensive media coverage of the fact that UK Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine chose extremely expensive curtains, wallpaper and other fittings for his official apartment in the House of Lords. It should be recognized that Lord Irvine has a right to personal privacy, and that details of this kind should not have been released. His apartment is a piece of the UK's national heritage, and it is therefore appropriate that money should be invested in decorating it.
