Holidays made in heaven ... and hell

Article Abstract:

Around 2 million people in the UK are departing from home on UK and foreign holidays on July 20 1996, as the school holidays have begun. People are still travelling to France, but are taking cheaper holidays because of the exchange rate. Fewer overseas package holidays from the UK are being booked, partly because of improved weather in the UK. Spain and the Balearics are still popular, but Northern Ireland tourism has been damaged by the latest violence. Long haul destinations include Australia, Cuba, the Silk Road, and Cambodia.

Kingfish steaks and Swahili cuisine

Article Abstract:

All-inclusive holidays are becoming very popular amongst UK tourists. Such holidays can range from a trip to a Butlins holiday camp to a trip to Mombasa, Kenya. At Butlins Southcoast World, Bognor, UK, visitors find that all entertainment, apart from the racetrack, among very few paying attractions, is free. Accommodation, even for the cheapest package, is clean and comfortable. A package to Mombasa from Hayes and Jarvis includes luxury hotels and three days safari.

Watching them watching us

Article Abstract:

Foreign visitors to the UK are frequently seen as a nuisance, as they seem to wander around and get in the way of people going about their everyday lives. They are targeted by souvenir sellers, who see them as easy targets, and often fail to realise that they are not viewing real British culture. Attempting to view places through the eyes of a tourist can give a very interesting insight into how ordinary people behave.
