Hollywood comes over all queer ...

Article Abstract:

Gay films are now moving into the mainstream of the film industry, with Hollywood currently backing a number of important gay film projects. The best new lesbian and gay films and videos from around the world are currently being shown at the 11th Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in London, England. Latest films tend to deal with difficult issues, rather than focusing on romance. There is strong emphasis on transsexuals, reflecting their increased visibility and their influence on gay and lesbian politics.

If you didn't laugh, you'd cry

Article Abstract:

A few gay comics are willing to treat the subject of Aids in the same way as they treat many other subjects, not being afraid to make a joke around Aids. Most recently, Paul Rudnick has made an entire comedy out of gay sexual manners, entitle 'Jeffrey.' Others have included Kevin Elyot's black comedy 'My Night with Reg' and two films about Aids, 'Grief' and 'Zero Patience.' These works have a refreshing approach to Aids, not treating it with the sentimentalism seen in some other productions.

Still feeling less than equal

Article Abstract:

Most gay men and lesbians reacted angrily when the government failed to lower the gay age of consent from 21 to 16 in Feb 1994, instead choosing the compromise age of 18. They felt that society was refusing to treat them as equal, and gained the impression that politicians saw them as second-class citizens. A case is now being brought before the European Commission of Human Rights, arguing that a discriminatory age of consent is an invasion of privacy.
