How Bosnia came to Bayswater

Article Abstract:

In 1995 there were 12,455 refugees from the former Yugoslavia granted permission to stay in the UK, at least temporarily with permission renewed on an annual basis. There is still hatred between different Yugoslav ethnic groups, who avoid mixing. In Shepherds Bush, London, there is a Serb restaurant, 011, which no Muslims or Croats would consider entering. There are five embassies in the UK for different former Yugoslav ethnic groups, plus advice and community centres.

Where a smack may land a parent in court

Article Abstract:

In Sweden it has been considered shameful to smack children since it became illegal in 1966. Parenting courses teach school pupils alternatives to smacking and parents receive instruction at ante-natal classes. Austria, Finland, Denmark and Norway have similar laws and Germany will have by 1994. Reported assaults on children in Sweden doubled between 1981 and 1991 but prosecutions are rare as there are usually no witnesses.

A stranger in my own land
