How Burma's resistance cheated the secret police

Article Abstract:

There is a strong atmosphere of fear in Burma as the military and the police infiltrate all areas of ordinary life. Anyone making an open protest against the authorities is taking a great risk, as is anyone who mixes with foreigners. The military regime pays particularly close attention to the foreign media, tapping all telephone lines and carefully monitoring the output of fax machines. However, it is still possible to disseminate information about protest activity.

Murder on the tourist trail - and a killer with a death wish

Article Abstract:

The case of John Martin Scripps, who is currently standing trial for the murder of a South African tourist in Singapore, has attracted considerable media attention. This is because he is a key suspect in three other murder cases too, and because he seems to have made very little effort to evade detection in the case for which he is currently standing trial. He does not deny the murder, but claims that it was an accident after the victim made a homosexual advance.
