Troubles take toll on the 'missing minister.'

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson has faced significant challenges in 1998. He was attacked for his involvement in a 12 million pounds sterling offshore trust, and also received criticism for failing to register directorships and for having connections with Robert Maxwell. Some observers believe that he is now coming close to resigning. The Conservative party has issued details of six Treasury events in the House of Commons since Oct 1998 in which he did not speak.

Strange ethics that makes friends with a state that tortures children

Article Abstract:

There are still close links between the UK government and Bahrain, even though the latter country is known to have been responsible for torture and extra-judicial killings. Bahrain has signed the United Nations Convention Against Torture, but suspected dissidents are still put under very strong pressure to make confessions. Many of those detained in Bahrain are children. Officials in Bahrain attribute some killings to terrorists.

Article Abstract:

In England and Wales, all 11-year-olds will now take nationally administered tests to assess the educational abilities. Pupils in Northern Ireland also take very similar tests, but in this case they are used to select which pupils will attend grammar schools.
