How Daniel got into the right school

Article Abstract:

It is particularly important for a black boy in the UK to obtain the best possible education, as many young black men struggle to lead a meaningful life when they leave full-time education. For some black boys, this will involve having private tuition to ensure that a place can be gained at the best secondary school. This can attract negative comments from the child's peers, and it is often necessary for the parents to show great determination that their child will perform well. It is also important to take into account the ethnic mix of the area in which particular secondary schools are situated.

When an inspector calls at an independent school

Article Abstract:

Some observers have claimed that inspections of independent schools in the UK are not rigorous enough, and that parents are therefore given a misleading picture of the school's standards. In contrast, many people working within the independent sector believe that independent inspection is vital and that such inspections are objective. They are not secretive, and the inspectors adopt a critical approach.
