Time to examine the nation's soul

Article Abstract:

A Royal Commission on the family could examine influences of 1993 which affect morality and lead to problems in society. Social conditions affect human behaviour, although individuals are responsible for their actions. Society needs the shared values of charity, self-control, integrity, faithful relationships and respect for humanity. Parents teach children they belong and practise moral values. Self-sacrifice and problems in family relationships strengthen love, but these, and commitment, are unpopular in modern society.

My escape from a family that was choking me

Article Abstract:

A young Asian describes his upbringing and reasons for leaving home. Punjabi-speaking families expect their children to give up most of their earnings and obey strict rules, such as being in by nine o'clock and not reading. They believe in arranged marriages. The Asian community does not let children grow into their own sense of identity. This can cause conflict and separation. Police community affairs officers help families to meet on neutral ground.
