How Euro-sceptics cornered Brown

Article Abstract:

UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has come under strong pressure from politicians and journalists opposed to closer links with the European Union as a result of his clash with German Finance Minister Oskar Lafontaine and French Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn over the harmonization of corporate tax rates. By summer 1999 at the latest, Brown will be forced to decide whether to exercise the UK's veto on tax policy and thus lose influence or change his stance and thus run the risk of further criticism from those opposed to closer links with the European Union.
