How Louise lost the image battle

Article Abstract:

The behavior of the English nanny, Louise Woodward, on trial for the murder of the child she was caring for, Matthew Eappen, is interpreted differently in the US and the United Kingdom. The US view of emotional health is that tears should flow in public and it is correct to be sentimental. Such behavior is distasteful in the UK, where Woodward's behavior was seen as that of a naive young girl who retained her composure under great pressure. The behavior of the dead boy's parents, Deborah and Sunil Eappen, met the criteria that is acceptable in the US by being more emotional.

Gentle defendant earns top marks from witness box

Article Abstract:

The trial of Louise Woodward in Cambridge, Massachusetts, relates to an Englis babysitter accused of killing the child, Matthew Eappen, she was caring for. The approach of the US and United Kingdom media has been different, and the UK media are concerned that the US system of justice may not be fair. There are fears that cultural differences could lead US observers to misjudge Louise as unemotional, while for the Britiah she is composed. There is large-scale support for her in her home town, where a 24-hour prayer hotline has been organized.

Towering folly of the man who lost a billion

Article Abstract:

Toshihide Iguchi, a trader at Daiwa Bank, is alleged to have undertaken 30,000 unauthorised trades over a period of 11 years, causing the bank to lose $1.1 billion. Observers are unable to explain how he was able to make losses of this scale without being detected. He had already gained a reputation as a trader prepared to take considerable risks, and some of his colleagues have expressed surprise that he did not become involved in a scandal any earlier.
