How a young life ended on killer mountain

Article Abstract:

Alison Hargreaves, who is believed to have perished recently in an avalanche after having reached the summit of K2, was one of the leading mountaineers in the UK. However, she only really attracted the attention of the general public shortly before her K2 expedition, when she became the first woman to climb Mount Everest without oxygen and by the hardest route. She was particularly admired for her great ambition, managing to combine extremely demanding climbs with a happy family life. She believe that women can do whatever they want if they are prepared to try.

K2 survivors defend attempt on summit

Article Abstract:

Spanish mountaineers Lorenzo Ortas and Pepe Garces, who have recently been rescued from K2 after having survived six nights without a tent, have defended the decision by British mountaineer Alison Hargreaves to climb the mountain, even though weather conditions were very poor. She was warned by the Pakistani army not to go ahead with the climb, which some observers believe was 'suicidal.' The Spanish mountaineers claim that her judgement of the situation was correct.

Why didn't she turn back?

Article Abstract:

Climber Alison Hargreaves, who went missing on K2 in Aug 1995, was known to be extremely determined and very experienced. It was therefore a great surprise when she failed to return and rescuers eventually had to accept that she was dead. Some observers have claimed that she was suffering from 'summit fever,' which encouraged her to continue an attempt to reach the summit despite very poor weather conditions.
