Putting flesh on Poussin's bones

Article Abstract:

The Royal Academy in London, UK, is soon to hold a retrospective exhibition of the paintings of Nicolas Poussin. This has in turn attracted attention to the highly respected art historian Sir Denis Mahon, who has for many years challenged the traditional views of Poussin's work. He welcomes the opportunity to see many of Poussin's paintings in the same setting, and does not hesitate to point out the mistakes which were made when such an exhibition last took place, in 1960. He hopes that this exhibition will finally allow the pictures to speak for themselves.

Velazquez in Scotland: less than meets the eye

Article Abstract:

The 'Velazquez in Seville' exhibition currently being staged by the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh features a number of extremely interesting works by this artist. However, visitors should be aware that only 20 of the around 50 works in the exhibition are actually by Velazquez. Some are after him, while others are studio works or works by Francisco Pacheco, his teacher. Some of the paintings are not hung well, and some rooms are insufficiently lit.

Pictures at a referendum

Article Abstract:

The National Gallery of Scotland is holding an exhibition of Scottish painting as part of the Edinburgh Festival. This covers the period 1830-1930, and includes works by arts such as Alexander Nasmyth, John Knox and David Wilkie. Some observers believe that separating Scottish art in this way is a misguided approach, as it needs to be seen alongside the European artistic heritage.
