How can you put a price on a good lawyer?

Article Abstract:

Mixed views have been expressed about the practice among legal publications in the UK of publishing profitability figures for leading law firms. Some observers believe that corporate clients have a right to know this information, especially as law firms, as partnerships, are not required to publish their accounts. Others regard this practice more negatively, feeling that it could damage the reputation of leading law firms to be seen as extremely profitable. Some in-house lawyers emphasize that they do not choose which law firms to use simply on the basis of profitability.

Mixed year begins and ends wrapped up in Straw

Article Abstract:

The UK legal system has undergone considerable change in 1998. These changes have affected consumers, judges and lawyers. The government has announced plans to radically amend the legal aid system, and has also undertaken consultation on reforming divorce law. It has also issued a consultation paper on how to eliminate delays in house sales. Judges have come under considerable pressure, and the Bar has also come under attack as the government seeks to end its almost complete monopoly on appearing in the higher courts.

Time for a silk cut?

Article Abstract:

The five Law Lords in the UK House of Lords are shortly to begin an investigation into the criminal legal aid fees of leading barristers Michael Mansfield, Christopher Sallon, Richard Henriques and Peter Feinberg. This investigation is likely to have wider implications for determining legal aid and payments to criminal law barristers. It will be the first time that the Law Lords will decide whether the fees of barristers should be made equivalent to those of other public service professionals.
